I had another thought Sifu.
If on the dummy is this where I practice staying in the centre when doing a turn. Regardless of the move. Tan and punch feels congested but the aim should be to keep my centre pointed to the dummy’s centre ( between the arms)

Hi Sifu
Hope you are good. Another rambling question. If you can make sense of it all and respond that would be great.
I’m wondering about the turning stance and any move that is put with it. Generally a punch or tan and punch I suppose.
Is there a time for use? Is it more for when already in contact with an opponent or is it more for w…[Read more]

Hi Tom
Not to impose my opinion more than anyone else’s. But I’m with you. You need something more tangible. For that a partner is needed.
I can tell you when I go to my class those guys are more advanced than me. They really understand maintaining centre line more than me. But they have been doing it longer and can go to class twice a wee…[Read more]

Hi Nick
Yes I think it’s good.
More to it than meets the eye. -

From one junior to the other
Yeah pressure testing is critical I feel otherwise no feeling or empirical knowledge is gained.I like to do shadow boxing both boxing and kick boxing. I also do some Shaolin Kung fu forms. The Shaolin stuff is meaningless to me without knowing Wing Chun, it’s just a way for me to maintain flexibility and range of m…[Read more]

Hi Sifu
You explained in a recent online class about the free arm or leg of the dummy and how it could be used when free styling on the dummy.
I really liked that idea. I have tried doing it and will continue to try and get better at it.
My initial feeling is one where I keep doing repetitive actions, rather than trying different positions.…[Read more]

I love both of them
Not that I’ve done them or thought of them until you suggested. But I can visualise the huen to the pak where the top of the wrist stays in contact.
Beating the chair pie with a bong to put them in fook sau when rolling is lovely when you think of it like that.
No doubt both will take some practice. Thank you very much.

Hi Sifu
Thanks again
This is who I train with at my actual class. https://www.jcvingtsun.com/
I would be hesitant in suggesting a seminar. Although I would happily come along to a one you hold or other class. -

Mostly does make sense. I also watched the videos in this blog to help https://wingchun.online/my-account/video-qa/how-many-different-elbows-are-there-in-wing-chun/.
I think basically after the chair pie elbow I would drop the elbow to the outside allowing me to assume the fook sau position and continue rolling although it wouldn’t be as s…[Read more]

Hi Sifu another one for you please.
I’ve just been watching the videos in lesson 2.3 Double handed chi sau journey, poon sau, chi sau aggressive change’s.
My question is about changing in the bong position. Is it possible?
I see the changes in fook and tan to force my partner to make the change and where I do it myself from those same pos…[Read more]

Cheers Sifu
I definitely mean inside pak from fook sau position to the ding sau.You mentioned stepping back above – found myself doing the step back the other day. How to progress from there is my next problem to solve.
I like this video to maybe answer the questions 3.5 Partner Training, Partner Training – Parts 4, 5 and 6.
I think if I g…[Read more]

Hi Sifu
I thought I would ask about this where normally I would keep it to myself.
The title suggests maybe this is about your teaching but it’s not. That’s just the subject matter.
Firstly the way you teach the above is fine by me and is like you say a bit of fun the way you’ve combined it and got a way to flow from exercise to exerc…[Read more]

Thinking about it overnight and a bit of practice with my daughter.
That same turning tan with a closed fist – needs to be a punch body or head maybe just to trap the arm of the incoming punch.
This way they feel the threat from me rather than me just being defensive.
Would still love to know if you have any other options.
Thanks

Hi Sifu
Hope you are good.
My question is the title of the post. Whilst searching I have just watched the video below. As such I realise I need to be more clear in my question. The video shows defending the inside pak in chi sau when the pak is started from the tan…[Read more]

Thanks Sifu
I’ve gotta ask.Is there a rule of thumb type understanding regarding our thinking “if we are only thinking about the upper arm” and also when thinking of the lower arm.
I know I haven’t developed the sensitivity yet to be able to feel where on my arm the press from the training partner is concentrated.
I can recall you saying…[Read more]

Hi Sifu
I was coming to the zoom class today with a few questions. But I don’t think it was on. I noticed the catchup video named as my subject header. I have another open ended series of thoughts and questions for you. Hopefully I have been able to get it down in a relatively understandable fashion to enable a response.
My questions were a…[Read more]

Hi Nick
With the exception of the pole form. I did the forms every day. Or what I mean is everyday I added a move or two at most. The objective being to remember each move in the sequence. I then drilled it to the point where I was either at the end of the moves I had reached at that time or if I forgot a move, no progression was made until I…[Read more]

I think it’s great. I used a dining chair with a foam roller stood up in front of a mirror with a weighted bit of string for a centre line for months. It is far better than that.
I do want a wooden one but it needs to be kept outside. So the blow up dummy is perfect moveable silent and the correct dimensions.
I’ve burst it about 7 times now…[Read more]
