Hi Lee,
No worries.
Regarding the Biu, the idea of that was that if I try to punch you with my right fist, using your right Biu, try to place your right hand on my right shoulder, that was the idea.
When you referred to ‘the opposite side’ it got me wondering? As for the Bong, do try the pole idea, however a simple idea is to just consider…[Read more]

Fully extend yes, but do not LOCK your arm.
That’s the difference we’re looking for.

Hi Nick,
Hope you have an amazing time on hilly, that sounds wonderful.

I understand the live sessions but glad you’re available for catchups2/
Great goals3/
Punches – correct, think of this
when we turning punch the target does not move (hence fist in centre, blade attacks the shoulder)
But in stepping this alters, as does your target,…[Read more] -

Hi Nick,
I’ve just jumped onto my laptop to see that this reply had not been sent!
I wrote it days ago.Anyway, the points were:
The punches in general need a tiny bit of work in relaxing (remember the acceleration and brake idea?)
As for your aim of the punches when stepping, aim these to centre (the blade, not the fist.
Garns – mistake but…[Read more]

Hi Lee,
Remember the attack does not occur until you reach your destination, the pushing out (from Kwun) if successful will hit when in reach, however the same issue is being played by the defending ‘pushing down’ (from Garn), neither will be concerned with ‘the attack’ UNTIL the power battle has been won
That ok?

Hi Helen, and thank you Lee for your assistance,
In the dummy Form there are 116 moves but as the number 8 is lucky in Chinese, they like to say there are 108 PLUS, 8 kicks, the kicks however do not refer completely to kicks but more to footwork.
I will write a blog on this for you tomorrow to make it clear (I’m just driving back from a holiday…[Read more]

Hi Lee,
The Po Pie from Kwun is an attack, pushing out first, the Po Pie from Garn is the defence for this attack.
As for the closes, this is more the principle than the technique (the ability to scoop around, attack down centre, defend centre, counter attack) and that is why it is worth training more, also the Po Pie is the principle of…[Read more]

HA!! LOL
Ashley, you crack me up 🙂
Siu Lim Tau CAN be done seated BUT, the best way is if it is one of those seats you kneel on, if that makes sense???
They had these years ago for working in offices, saying they were better posture etc.
In failing that, TODAY it’s hard work, but out the time in and it will get easier.
Now where did I…[Read more]

No rushing remember, it is better to allow things to digest at a nice pace, and DO always return to the basics, it will help you in the long run.
Happy training Monroe!

Hello Jean-Luc,
I like this as it is a fair and honest question.
I would like to answer the second question first by saying YES, it is vital that you train both sides and not favour one side over another.
NEVER assume anything, such as thinking that your attacker will always be right handed or that you will always have time to get ready for the…[Read more] -

On the Garn the elbow is tight but when changing to the guard it is away, stepping through with the Tan it becomes tight again as it is being ‘used’ but then away again for the guard with the low Lap/Gum
Hope this helps.
