      Sifu Ward,

That is no problem at all. I just needed to know if I will owe a second assessment fee. You can let me know via email if you prefer.

      Sifu Ward,

I thought the bold type was to emphasize that point. LOL

Anyway, yes I understand what you mean about sticking to what you have taught here. I know that it is on me to adapt what I am doing to what YOU want to see in the assessments, not vice versa. And it is fitting because my man Bruce Lee always talked about emptying your cup. Well, his quote applies directly to this kind of situation. It’s like if I decided I wanted to study another style completely; I couldn’t go to a Karate school and expect them to let me get away with doing their techniques in a “Wing Chun” way.

And last but not least…HOPEFULLY be worth it? No, sir, it will DEFINITELY be worth it.

I am no psychiatrist so I cannot speak to that. LOL However, I submitted my videos both via this site AND shared videos with you from Dropbox, which I sent to you in email.

      Matt,

I skimmed your article. It sounded pretty cool, so I will definitely read it more in-depth later.

      Sifu,

I agree with what Sigung Ip Chun said about not blowing your own horn, being humble, being mild, etc. I am sure at your level (And his of course) you have a better understanding of this, but for some of us “down here” still, I think it is a sticky wicket. Mainly I am speaking of my own experience of course, which is the experience of someone who had low self-esteem for the majority of his life.

The trick is to determine the difference between being humble, and having an unhealthy self-opinion. For example, you shouldn’t walk around shouting “I’M THE BEST WING CHUN PRACTITIONER OF ALL TIME,” like some East Asian Muhammad Ali, but at the same time, you should be confident in yourself. If you are a beginner, you should think, “I’m no expert or anything, but I’m getting the hang of this!” And if you have been at it for a while, it is always good to acknowledge that you do have a decent skill level, while simultaneously never letting yourself get complacent.

Just my two cents, my humble opinion, for what it’s worth. Well, then again I already SAID what it’s worth: two cents!

      Sifu Ward,

No, the compressing was done to the files that are in the upload area on this site.

The dining was great. She ordered the “boys” version of the Happy Meal because she said the toys that come with the girls’ version are lame!

      Sifu,

As you will see, I got them all to upload. The thing is, when I recorded them on my iPhone, which is the only way I have to record, they were all over 50MB. I had to compress them and then upload again, which was very time-consuming and nearly made me miss the deadline. LOL Luckily I had a friend who knows all about this compression business, and she was willing to help me. I took her out to a nice dinner as compensation!

      Sifu Ward,

I have often wondered about the order of forms myself. Well, actually just two of them: Biu Jee and Mook Jong. Some people do it different and for different reasons. So I was wondering your thoughts on the different ordering. I have seen people do it this way:

      Sil Lum Tao
      Chum Kiu
      Biu Jee
      Mook Jong
      Pole
      Knives

Then I have seen people flip the order of Biu Jee and Mook Jong. In my humble opinion (which, in reality, might not be worth much, or anything), to me it seems like in SLT and CK, you learn the real nuts and bolts of the system while practicing the techniques in the air. But then in the Mook Jong form, you are applying the SLT/CK moves against something that takes up physical space. Therefore you have to learn distance, and you also have to learn proper release of energy. If you don’t release energy into the dummy properly, then your own palm strike could actually knock YOU back instead of the opponent. Not an ideal situation at all, of course!

As for why Biu Jee would come after, I think it’s because Wing Chun teaches you to fight in a way very different from most styles out there. You don’t generate power by winding up; you generate it through proper body mechanics. Therefore, you have to LEARN the rules of this new approach before you can break them, and the Biu Jee form is about breaking them. Well, maybe not when the Wing Chun practitioner breaks them…but more like when they are FORCED to break them because they lost the centerline. Hence why it is called the “desperation form” by some.

Those are my thoughts on it anyway. Sifu Ward, I would like to know yours.

Yes, sir. I didn’t do my video QUITE in that fashion, so when it comes time to submit, I will redo it.

      Thank you so much!

I changed the name of the video…not sure if that changed the link.

      Sifu Ward,

I have not had the time yet to watch this video back, so for all I know, the sound is garbage. However, I think it shows you what you need for the section of the assessment in question.

      Sifu Ward,

You know what? I can occasionally be quite the knucklehead.

How about I make a sample video before the assessment is due, and you can advise me?

Just to be clear, I am NOT looking to be graded/assessed ahead of time. This is strictly to be sure I am demonstrating the right stuff.

      Sifu Ward,

Just got them. Bah, this would be so much easier to do if my prior training and muscle memory weren’t working against me. I will do my best in redoing the necessary videos, but please understand at this point I have to be very conscious of each move, as I am trying to not do them the way my other lineage training has me doing them automatically! LOL

      Sifu Ward,

So let me see if I get this right:

We do the Biu Mar with 90 degree angles, and then we alternate demonstrating a punch or kick at the end of the step? Is that what you would like to see?

      Steve
