I am sorry Sifu, I feel like I should understand this but I don’t. As Chi Sau is finally becoming part of my weekly training, I have some basic questions… 🤔
Quite simply, why do we change positions in poon sau?
Are inside and outside positions typically better positioned for certain attacks? Is there a desired position that some are striving for…[Read more]

I think it’s differentiated from explosive energy in that explosive energy is how much force you can generate in a short burst, where as shocking energy is more like when you talk about how quick you can turn it off. So in a way you can’t have shocking energy without explosive energy, but explosive energy that isn’t turned off quickly is not…[Read more]

‘oh aye that’s what I get for posting at 1am’ LOL 🙂 Brilliant.
From what you are saying, sounds just like explosive energy to me, so you’re on the right track.

Thank you for the kind response Sifu. It is so good to hear you’re on holiday. I must have missed that update.
I do apologize for interrupting and of course am deeply grateful for your response.
Thank you. Enjoy your holiday!!!! 😀😀😀

I’ve actually put together a “sport medicine” kit, consisting of a small phial of Dit Da Jow (apparently a formula designed by Leung Jan), a bottle of Yunnan Baiyao, and a pouch of 10 40x.20 spring-handled needles
just in case someone gets injured or pulls a muscle in a class

from what I can gather of geng ging, it magnifies the effects of most techniques, helping to disrupt balance and inflict penetrating trauma, as well as allowing a practitioner to rapidly change directions and chain techniques. Most Hakkanese arts train its use in all directions, whereas apparently most…[Read more]

Hi Tom,
Of course the phrase is:
“As soon as you USE it, lose it” and is a phrase I use rather than Sifu, but I must admit, the idea of Shocking Power sounds perfectly in tune with what I am getting at, as this is the effect it will have.

A query for Sifu,
Every time you mention “once you lose it, lose it” or “turning on the force only at the moment of impact, no longer” it reminds me of a principle from Hakkanese martial arts known as Geng Ging, or Shocking Power. I’m led to believe that this concept is rare in Hong Kong lineages, and am curious if it’s something Ip Sigung teaches.

Cheers Sifu,
I was wondering if you could remind me of the progression of Wing Chun positions again please. I have been thinking through them this week and do not believe that I have them correct.
Here is a video to help explain may question. I do hope it makes sense?
Thank you as always!!!
See you Thursday!

Hi Lee,
I’m jumping in at this point because as soon as I read…
‘I feel comfortable in all area but not overly as I do get hit.’
This made me think of a common issue… If you are doing everything you think you should be doing, think about the attack, sometimes it is your partner who may be sneaking something else in that goes against what…[Read more]

Hi Sifu, Nick
I haven’t finished thinking about it in all fairness, not that a response from me was needed.
We need to take responsibility for our own actions being the bit I’m thinking about. In general and in practice.
Being able to pair it up with empirical knowledge of failures when chi sau ing or doc sau is the difficult part. The que…[Read more]
