Amy E started the topic knee injuries and Wing Chun in the forum Members Forum 3 years, 11 months ago
To start this. My doctor told me learning Wing Chun would not be a problem, I just have to be careful about knee involving postures/stances. My left knee does not have an ACL tendon due to military damage. I do wear soft knee braces to mitigate the lack for the left knee and the arthritis from years of bad gait while having a hard knee brace. Many…[Read more]

Hey Nick,
The P.E.R.T. is for Chi Sau in general, not Dan Chi.
Chi Sau is a general term meaning sticking hands, when we refer to PERT we are in fact meaning when in Gor Sau (attacking hands) what most simply call, ‘Chi Sau’
Dan chi
Lap sau
Poon sau
These are the guiding blocks up to this level, then when we feel comfortable with all this, we…[Read more] -

Hi Sifu,
We have been playing (free flow) Dan Chi Sau here and I wanted to ask for your clarification and insight to some of my learning.
If I am understanding your teaching correctly, then Dan Chi Sau is for:
• Position – understanding your range
• Energy – understanding when to stop
• Reaction – understanding sensitivity and not over commi…[Read more] -

Hi Sifu,
Thank you for the reply! I would certainly be interested if you ever ran a weekend or day course in the future? Plenty of western boxing clubs around my location great for sparring but not for applying the concepts of wing chun sadly! Thanks again!

The turning of the stance, rotation of the shoulder and the tucking in of the elbow, will all close down much faster than you may think, although…
This defence does leave you vulnerable to a palm strike from the other hand, so watch for it.
Oh and if you’re trying this yourself and the palm doesn’t seem to fit, lift your elbow out and you will…[Read more] -

A good point and a key point!
First of all this is practice, coupled with the solid understanding of trying to get the elbow into centre…
Don’t know where centre is? More 1st Form!
This is why Siu Lim Tau is so important, understanding WHERE centreline is, so we know WHAT we are recovering ‘to’.As for timing, yes, your partner does have the…[Read more]

Very kind of you Nick, and yes I agree, a very good question.
You are so right, there are many people who I am sure read these questions with relief that it has been asked by another, perhaps because they were not sure of asking it themselves?
I do not know, but what I do know is that for anyone reading this, we are here for you, so please do…[Read more] -

There you go brother! It really is a tremendous feeling. It really is hard to explain; especially, when it happens and your start looking around the room waiting for someone to congratulate you on it.
Keep up the hard work! -

Hello Sifu.
I have a question
I think it is from 3.7 in the library. When rolling in chi sau on the outside (ding & fook) and my partner goes for a pak, you teach in the drill that a simple defense is to simply turn with the ding sau.
My question is this. When my partner drills a perfect pak, by that I mean it is well timed and not forecast,…[Read more]

Wow. If I may briefly just say to you Amy E & Sifu (and of course Amy E’s husband 😀)…
THANK YOU!!!
This is just a fantastic Q & A. As I also continue to train, learn and share my learning with others now, it is posts like this that really showcase the value of this forum.
You share a very pertinent question Amy E. and it will of course be ask…[Read more]

Thank you Sifu Ward. It helps a lot. My husband read this with me and he 100% is working on getting my confidence up. He did fuss that I need to not get flustered if I make a mistake, but recover and do something, as in a situation the person coming after me won’t give me time to recover. My husband also thinks that after watching me practicing,…[Read more]

Hi Amy,
As this is quite a long question, I decided to address it as I went along, so, for the first part:-
When we refer to ranges, it is important that if you are the smaller person, make sure that either YOU are in range, OR that nobody is.
This could be done by stepping in at the same time as your attacker does, OR by turning when you…[Read more] - Load More
