SBM is working hands and feet, changing ranges etc. but also recovering centre, therefore we allow it to be lost in order to recover it, always make sure you know you are doing this deliberately and then the overcommitment will not become acceptable.

Everything, but as you say, just a little bit.
Please remember that we are not training ourselves to overcommit, we are training ourselves what do to do if we overcommit.

Hi Lee,
Missing seeing you but good to know you’re in the wings.
As this is a ling looking question, I will answer as I read.‘I’m really trying to understand the key concepts of the dummy which I think is position and moving around an opponent.’
AND staying close while doing it.‘I also have in mind some of the descriptions you have used w…[Read more]

Well that’s great to hear!
And while we are on the subject of Sarm Bak Mar drills; when we “over-committ” just a little bit to allow a follow-up attack, are we over-committing with just our hand, our hand and shoulders, or hand, shoulders and hips? -

Nice to hear from you Lee!
Fan sau means ‘continuous attacks’, not going potty on each other, but simply meaning that the strikes are coming from an already existing contact but not necessarily from the roll.

Hi Sifu hope you’re good.
I’m still at it btw but cannot make the Thursday classes.I have a question I can hardly put into words but I will give it a go.
It’s come about because I’m practicing the dummy as much as I can. I’m really trying to understand the key concepts of the dummy which I think is position and moving around an opponent.…[Read more]

What is Fan Sau please?
Thanks -
Sifu Colin Ward replied to the topic Dok Sau in the forum Members Forum 3 years, 11 months ago
Mmmm,
Not necessarily, it may (and usually does) come from the rolling action first, but either would work, providing your partner understands the need to wait, allowing you to exhaust all options regarding the left attack then the right, the left support then the right, the left step in then the right, the left step out then the right, all with…[Read more]

Duanne, BRILLIANT!
This is the very essence of what I mean by learning through teaching, teach your students properly and you will learn from them, however in this case, it’s all yours.
A great idea, well done.
I will start thinking of this straight away.
This is a great drill to work WITH a partner but yes, why not still train it solo, and…[Read more]

Just so I have a better understanding in regards to dok sau, would dok sau essentially be fan sau with the allowance of fan sau by your training partner after their initial attack? Perhaps it is even what we are training in our virtual sparring sessions so that we get comfortable with what is available to us after an attack.

I had a thought on training Sarm Bak Mar drills virtually; similar to virtual sparring.
Using SBM with single pak saus seems like a feasible training exercise to utilize virtually. We could quite possibly even expand into threes, fives, and sevens. I think this would would give students an opportunity to test their SBM abilities while engaging…[Read more] -

Hi Amy,
I do believe you know what I am going to say, but still… “If it’s not comfortable, it’s not right”
Pain is our body’s way of telling us something is wrong, to ignore this is foolish.
The simple solution to your concerns/issue, is to close the distance between the feet and do not bend so low, this is only practice after all.
As for…[Read more]
