Dear Sifu Colin Ward,
Hope you are in good health.
Due to different time zones I was not able to attend your live sessions but all got well due to your session recordings. Thanking you for same. Now from some months back I took time to practice Wing Chun and had noticed that the websites Wing Chun Video for Module “14.4 Knife Form Applications…[Read more] -

Hey Duanne,
Pretty much this is the same elbow for both, the only difference being that of the stance/weight distribution.
In regards to there being a difference in the Biu Gee form (pre Ip Man), I think there was a slighter angling of the second strike in order to show ‘SOME’ difference between the Kup and the Gwoi, even though the stance was…[Read more]

Greetings! I’m hoping to get some clarity on something.
If I recall correctly, there’s actually two main differences between the Kup Jarn and Gwoi Jarn.
1) Back stance vs forward stance
2) Vertical vs 45°
If I am understanding the two main differences correctly, is there one that more defines which elbow is which?
For example; if I were to…[Read more]

I think I understand your meaning.Recognising those different scenarios is where I feel I need to start or be aware of.

Hi Guys!
Interesting question Lee, and a great answer Duanne.
Regarding the āTechniques in the forms are a story board set up for convenienceā you are 100%
Regarding the Bong itself, a bong is a bong, as it is only the description of a shape.
Regarding the use of the Bong???This can be simplified in to two areas, hard or soft (a low bong is…[Read more]

Cheers Duanne. I can only imagine you were thinking of your younger wilder days when reading the title.
Thanks for the uses of the bong that you suggested or use.
I definitely use the bong as a defensive tool but I like how it feels when I know the punch is coming and I attack it with the bong.
Some practice on the high garn and bong will…[Read more]

I was WAY off about what I thought this thread is about…
But anyway I’d like to offer my thoughts on this.
Already in turning stance and bong can come from a high garn sau to the inside with the bong covering their follow-up.
Turning into a bong is probably the most common use of our bong.
Stepping into the bong to simulate movement (as…[Read more]

Hi Sifu, everyone
Iām wondering about the different bongs.
Why and where will they be used?
To explain I can think of three instances on the wooden dummy of different bongs. Although my question is not necessarily a wooden dummy question.
Section 1 – already in a turning stance and bong
Section 6 – turning into a bong
Section 8 – stepping i…[Read more] -

Dear Sifu,
In response to the latest blog on Sifu/Father’s Day, I hadn’t considered just how hard that must be for you to be worlds apart from your own Sifu. I’m sure he is at proud of you as any teacher or father could be.
Anyway, the point of my message was to say that I am sure you are as amazing a father to your own children as you are a Sifu…[Read more] -

As long as your feet are not turning out, then you should be ok.
The turning in initially is gain comfort with how we redirect force, but once this is understood, we can relax the need to be SO turned in.
I did a post on this recently I think, wonder if I can find it for you…
Let me know how you get on please?
Sifu

Aha… after revisiting Elbows / Hands (A-G-A-I-N) 😮💨 I think I understand…
Chi Sau rules:
⢠Elbows High, Elbows Low
⢠Any tension comes from the base of the forearm (elbow energy applied?)
⢠Hands stay relaxed till usedTherefore Elbow / Hands / Fingers… these are all separate (6) little engines idling until being used.
⢠When rolling…[Read more]

Your approach to finding the answer is good, you are right to seek clarification if uncertain (and even then so).
I must admit that this question made me chuckle slightly in all honesty, because of your experience (and yet asking such a basic question), and yet it is exactly the kind of questioning that will undoubtably put you above…[Read more]

Sifu,
Since weāre focusing on elbows / hands right now during training, a question arose that I could not answer.
Why do we think elbow high and elbow low in chi sau?
What are the benefits and what are the weaknesses of not doing so? Iām not well versed in chi sau outside of this instruction but Iām not a newcomer either and I have never heard…[Read more]

It does! Absolutely.
In the same way with the knuckles, we donāt intentionally roll the wrist in for contact (only) on the knuckles.
Likewise, we donāt over roll the foot under to only strike with the blade.
Doing so in either situation can cause injury.
Thank you. Always thank you!
