Hi Brian,
Personally I do not teach the rings as my opinion is one that in order to hold the ring you must press outward, forcing the hands away from each other, should these positions then be trained without the rings there is a strong possibility of the hands drifting from their desired position.
I train the traditional way and without the…[Read more]

Always welcome Brian,
Oh and have a go at this one too…
Try your punches from that seated position, it’s a great way of seeing how much of your body you are using and how much you’re possibly overcommitting.
The thing I’d want you to notice is how much roll of your shoulders in being incorporated, to eliminate this you’ll find you need to…[Read more] -

Hi again Monroe,
A good question.
A bit of both really, if you feel as though you are really getting to grips with something and have a reasonable understanding, then definitely move on. Trying to wait until you master it could take an unnecessarily long time, plus, we master things through our experience, therefore moving froward in the…[Read more]

Great news Brian, and I hope you’re feeling better every day.
Do try rolling your arms between tans and bongs, you don’t even need to do them both together (if that feels odd sat down I mean?)
When I driving and about to turn a tight corner, I often imagine I am rolling from a fook sau to a bong sau, or even just lifting to a blocking bong…[Read more]

Hey Monroe!
This is a great set up with the subtitles!
If it’s ok I am making comment as we go, pausing the video as I do…
Lap Sau ex – In short, think, ‘elbow high for the Bong, elbow low for the punch’
Turning – turn with the Bong, square up for the punch.
The reason being is that we are not learning to punch or to lap, but how to defend…[Read more] -

Hi Monroe,
Yes there is something I worked on previously, I will try to find this as I’m not sure it was completed before the lockdowns hit.
As for partners…
If you feel that a person you are with at that time is relatively proficient in a particular area, then video that technique, saving the more basic moves for a less skilled person (such…[Read more]

Bless you my friend and may I wish you the greatest of joy in your Chi Sau training.
Try not to tense and simply allow yourself to flow (this is not a fight :-))And do please pass on my regards to your trainer there.
As to your question, yes this is just a gesture of a step and touching down with the ball of the foot rather that the tiptoe,…[Read more]

Sifu Colin Ward replied to the topic Min Dao / Sau Arm Position in the forum Members Forum 5 years, 5 months ago
Try to think of this the same as a normal Man Sau elbow position, however you will need to bend your wrist a touch in order to have the knife blade facing the correct angle, obviously if the blade of your hand was facing upward (then with the grip) the knife would be pointing to the ground.
However, if this feels odd then a straight arm would be…[Read more]

Hi Lee,
The simple difference with these two ranges and palms is exactly that…
Basic – If stepping in behind the leg and using the stance, Tan and palm to push someone away, then yes the palm is landing and it is low, low because this helps to give ‘lift’, lightening the load a little while the tam and leg are used for top and bottom…[Read more]
