Sifu,
Yes, in MY interpretation of “Cross-training,” I am trying to practice against non-Wing Chun attacks. However, some people might come to the group who study Style A, and they want to try to incorporate techniques from Style B. If that is how they choose to train, then they are free to do so. As for me, I am trying to pressure test my Wing…[Read more]

Yes. That is partly why I started a free cross-training group, which I have not talked about here, but I would like to send you personally a link to check out. Think about it: what are the odds that, in a bar or at a bus stop, we will get into a street fight with someone else who does the same style as us? I’d say your odds would be better at…[Read more]

Sifu Ward,
I just wanted to let you know ahead of time that, while I have done Wing Chun since 1995, any partner I have in any of my videos will either be a total martial arts “noob,” or someone who has trained in a different style. In other words, their participation in things like Chi Sau might be sloppy or not up to par. I hope this is okay…[Read more]

I thought the assessments were an extra cost, kind of like if you join a Tae Kwon Do school and then have to pay extra to take a test for your next belt.

Sifu,
Just read it over. Very good stuff there! I will give it a more in-depth reading as time allows.

Sifu Ward,
I saw, but did not get to read it yet. I will though, as I definitely plan on submitting my videos for this round of assessment!

Sifu,
Oh okay, right. I should have known how to do the Lap with Cheun Mar. LOL
As for Gor Sau, I see what you mean. Basically just good old-fashioned completely improvised Chi Sau, like grandma used to make!

Sifu,
I have been scouring the modules to figure out what videos will help me out with the Siu Lim Tao assessment. I have located videos for MOST of them. However, I have been unable to find videos for:
Lap Sau with Cheun Mar
Gor SauI know from the terminology sheet that Gor Sau means “attacking hands,” but that doesn’t help me understand…[Read more]

Sifu and My Fellow Wing Chun Practitioners,
I had what I felt was an interesting discussion with a friend of mine yesterday, and I wanted to share it here. This is going to be somewhat winding and lengthy, so grab a cup of tea or coffee, or even a beer, sit back, and enjoy the ramble.
My friend Jeff and I were talking about writing a book…[Read more]

Sifu,
I copied and pasted the assessment syllabus into Microsoft Word and then combined it with answers you have given me about it in previous posts. Please let me know if what I have here is correct as far as your expectations for each segment of the assessment.

Sifu,
No, I did not have anything to send at the moment. I just wanted to be sure the quality is good enough when I do. Thanks!

Sifu Ward,
I have shared this video before, and I am sharing it again for the sole purpose of just asking a question about it. The content is irrelevant.
And my question is this: any/all footage I will shoot for assessment videos will be shot on the same device that was used to create this video. So I am simply wondering if the quality (both…[Read more]

Sifu Ward,
I liked the comment you made in one of the “Knife Versus Pole” videos. You said some people might ask why we would train in the pole if we are a close-range style anyway. You said to defeat something, you must understand how it works. I like that line of thinking.
It made me reflect back on something my first Sifu from the Ip Ching…[Read more]

Well, naturally…but there are surprisingly a lot of people I meet who have never seen that powerful movie.

No I have not been stealing lessons, but I AM the one who really stole and sold the Glengarry leads.
You get mad bonus points if you get that reference!

There is no module 13.4; instead it goes from 3 to 5. Doh!

Sifu Ward,
Okay, I am glad I caused no offense. I thought you were under the impression that I thought I was trying to teach YOU something. Not at all. Then again, I do think in a way we all can learn from each other.
I will share it in the Facebook group too.
Thanks,
Steve
