Are You Off The Grid?

Where are you?

It’s been a long time since I’ve uploaded any blogs, and not because I’ve had nothing to share.

There have been lots of things happening, new videos being uploaded, new discoveries being made, and LOTS of Wing Chun training to be had.

Some of our members may have been wondering about the recent trip to Hong Kong over this month’s Chinese New Year, and wondering why there’s been no running daily commentary, well the reason for this, and I do not mean to sound rude in any way, but the reason for this was simply that while I was in Hong Kong, I believed that this was their time.

By that I mean, giving my full attention to the students I who travelled with me and who I was teaching live at that time, I never like to be distracted in that kind of situation.

I see such opportunities as a way to connect, to get to know my students deeper and therefore better understand their needs, allowing me to then get the most from them and see their true potential.

This is the same for when I am teaching the livestream classes at WingChun.Online, or with our Fast-track private students.

There have been many times at my class in Leeds, where I have considered videoing a technique or an idea, which I feel could be beneficial to others, but have resisted the temptation, not because of being mean, but because at that time, it was their time.

This thinking reminds me of Master Ip Chun’s teaching regarding Form-work, and understanding which Form is the most important, the answer being:

‘Which ever Form you are training at that time’

I have always loved this is comment, and have taken even further by thinking, not only which Form is the most important, but which move is the most important, with the answer once again being, ‘Which ever MOVE you are training at that time’.

This is a level of Form training that transfers directly to your training in Chi Sau, and therefore the street too.

In such circumstances you should not, and cannot, be distracted from what is in front of you, right there and right now.

I have said many times that Wing Chun is Chi Sau and Chi Sau is Wing Chun, and with this same thinking, many people think of their Wing Chun as a way of life, in which case, life, is Chi Sau, and what a skill to train, to have the ability to stay in the moment, and enjoy what is in front of you right now.

Enjoy the journey rather than only ever thinking of the destination

On some platform or another, I recently saw a shocking image, two photographs, taken in a club in Ibiza, same club, same event, one image shot in 2014, where everyone was dancing and having a great time, and the other shot taken in 2024, where everyone was standing still, with a sea of smart phones, videoing the DJ playing his set, the DJ!

Live in the now, enjoy what you have while you have it, and don’t watch life pass you by.

I heard a great comment from Jimmy Carr, not in his role as a comedian but on a serious topic, he said:

“In thirty years from now, you would give everything you own,

to be this age you are right now and as healthy as you are right now”

Don’t wait until it’s gone to appreciate what you have right now, so with this in mind, and wanting everyone to enjoy the beauty of life, rather than just getting by, I decided to get back to opening my thoughts and sharing them with others (whether you like it or not).

I’m not trying to be the big I AM, or to dictate to you what is right and wrong, or even suggesting that what I am saying is correct at all, it’s just a thought, purely to encourage us all to see the good in life and enjoy what we have, starting with Wing Chun.
